Artist Statement

I used David Moore’s, Pedestrians in the Wind series as my reference for this piece. At first I had no idea what I was going to do, all I knew is that I wanted to shoot in the studio, to work on my technical skills more and I wanted to incorporate my love of dance into it.

Dance is a huge passion of mine and has shaped me into the person that I am today. I was so intrigued by this particular series of images from Moore because it captured movement in a moment of time. Movement had always been something that fascinated me and I thought to myself that the only indicator of movement in the original photo is from the woman's hair being blown by the wind. I decided to tap into that and re-create the image with my perspective of movement, which was some form of dance and a modern take on it, hence the vans shoes instead of the heels. The reason I have the model jumping is to mimic the movement that exists while dancing. I wanted to give the sense that she is floating because it mimics what dancers have to portray through their movement. I also decided to still incorporate the wind blown effect as it is a huge aspect of the original photograph and gives the viewer a sense of movement. By combining these two main features I was able to re-create my own version of the famous image and have a deeper meaning and understanding of what is reflected to an audience when one is dancing. In life, we often get caught up in the big picture rather than appreciating the beauty behind each intricate move or change that occurs, this series reminds us to stop, observe and have gratitude.
